The school
Árbæjarskóli is one of the largest primary schools in Iceland, located in the unique environment of Elliðaárdalur. The school boasts a rich history of over 50 years. From 1956 to 1966, the school operated in a community center in Árbæjarblettur, teaching in three divisions. In the autumn of 1967, the school moved to a new building with 421 students.
Today, Árbæjarskóli is a primary school for grades 1 to 10. The school has a single-session schedule and 750 students. The school is an consolidated school for lower secondary education after students from Árbæjarskóli, Ártúnsskóli, and Selásskóli transfer there. About 100 employees work at the school in a variety of positions for the benefit of the students.
The management team consists of the school principal, two assistant principals, two heads of division, student council, and school council.
The after-school program Töfrasel is for children in grades 1 to 4 at Árbæjarskóli, and the youth center Ársel offers diverse and enjoyable activities for children and teenagers.

School rules
School Rules (Article 30 of Act No. 91/2008) and school culture
The foundation of good school operations is for each person to respect others and themselves. Everyone engaged in schooling should have the opportunity to carry out their work without disruption or harassment. Staff, students and parents should familiarize themselves with Árbæjarskóli's school rules. Árbæjarskóli reviews its school rules annually. Rules are presented to parents and homeroom teachers go over them with students at the start of the school year.
General school rules
- School interactions are based on mutual respect, positivity, courtesy and consideration. Students must follow instructions from school staff.
- Parents are responsible for their children arriving punctually at school with necessary materials each day. Parents must report any illness or request for absence at the start of the school day; otherwise, the school will consider it an unauthorized absence. If parents visit the school, they must always check in at the school office and use the main entrance. Other entrances are for students only.
- Students should take good care of their school, both indoors and outdoors.
- Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, electric bikes and motor vehicles are not allowed on school grounds during school hours. These vehicles are not stored inside the school but must be kept at bike racks.
- Árbæjarskóli is a phone-free school. Students may not use phones during school hours without special permission from a teacher. If students bring phones to school, they must be kept in school bags, locked lockers or phone pouches (during class). This also applies to headphones, AirPods, buds and similar items.
- Using Chromebooks to play computer games during or outside of class violates school rules. See the section on consequences for such violations. Educational games assigned by teachers are exempt from this rule.
- Students may not use personal smart devices during school hours on school premises except under teacher guidance and permission.
- Audio and video recordings are only allowed on school premises and grounds during school hours with permission from teachers and/or school administrators. Consent is required from those being recorded. It's prohibited to publish or distribute images or videos of students or staff online or elsewhere without permission. See rules on taking and sharing photographs in Reykjavík City school and recreational activities | Reykjavík
- Students should bring healthy, nutritious snacks from home. On special occasions, teachers may allow students to bring other types of snacks.
- Students may not consume sweets, soda, vitamin or energy drinks at school during school hours. Students in grades 1-7 are not allowed to have gum at school.
- Students should not wear outerwear or headgear in classrooms without teacher permission.
- Eating and drinking in classrooms is prohibited for students in grades 8-10, except on special occasions with staff permission.
- Students in grades 1-7 should be outside during recess unless weather prevents outdoor activities or they are recovering from illness. Students should remain on school grounds during school hours.
- Students should not leave valuables in the pockets of their clothing, in hallways, or in locker rooms. The school is not responsible for students' belongings. Students must take their school bags and sports bags home at the end of each school day.
- Smoking, e-cigarettes, and nicotine pouches, as well as the use, handling, or possession of any intoxicating substances, are prohibited at school, on school grounds, and wherever students participate in school-sponsored activities.
- Árbæjarskóli school rules and point system apply wherever students participate in school-sponsored activities. See the consequences for rule violations.
Attendance rules
Árbæjarskóli has attendance rules designed to encourage regular school attendance and quickly address any attendance problems that may arise. The school tracks absences, tardiness, illness and leave records for students in grades 1-10 using a tiered system based on points accrued for tardiness and absences, as well as the number of days for illness and leave. Attendance summaries appear in Mentor, where both parents and students can view these records. The school office also emails parents weekly attendance status reports. Parents are responsible for monitoring their children's school attendance, and both parents and students have one week to report any discrepancies in the records. Homeroom teachers monitor student tardiness and absences and follow established procedures and point systems when intervention is required. The attendance team monitors illnesses and leaves and follows established procedures and point systems when intervention is required. The team consists of assistant principals and school counselors.
Illness
- Parents must report illness and leave at the beginning of the school day by calling 411 7700, emailing arbaejarskoli@reykjavik.is or using mentor.is. Without proper notification, the absence will be marked as unauthorized.
- If a student needs to leave school during the day due to sudden illness or other valid reasons, a parent must notify the school office. Without this notification, the absence will be marked as unauthorized.
Licenses
- If a student needs leave for one or more class periods during the school day, a parent must contact the school office and provide details about the school leave request.
- For a leave of 1-2 days, parents must apply at the school office. The school requires an explanation for the school leave request.
- For a leave of 3-5 days, parents must apply using a special form, which is available at the school office or on the school website. The school requires an explanation for the school leave request.
- Leaves longer than a week are considered temporary exemptions from school attendance. In these cases, a parent must apply for the leave using the specified form. The school requires an explanation for the school leave request.

Primary school meals
School meals are free for the 2025-2026 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.
Students registered last year will be automatically enrolled. Others need to register. Change the registration at matur.vala.is.

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child.
